Before any training begins, the e-collar must be fitted and set correctly. If it is not, the dog receives inconsistent information and the training falls apart before it starts. The collar is a communication tool, not a shortcut or a correction machine, and correct setup is what keeps the training fair, clear, and effective.

Step-by-step setup:

• Fit the collar high on the most muscular part of the dog’s neck, left or right hand side. (see photo below)

• Adjust it so it is snug and secure, with the contact points touching the skin, but not so tight that it restricts movement or breathing.

• Choose the correct contact points for your dog’s coat. Short coat equals short points. Thick or dense coat equals longer points.

• Rotate the collar position slightly between sessions and check the skin regularly to prevent irritation.

• Start the stimulation level at zero and increase slowly until you see a mild acknowledgement such as an ear flick or head turn. (see video below)

• Stop at the lowest level the dog can feel. If the dog yelps, jumps, or panics, you are far too high.

When the e-collar is set up properly, it provides consistent, low-level information the dog can understand and respond to calmly. Get this right and the training is clean and precise. Get it wrong and the handler creates confusion, stress, and resistance, then blames the tool. The collar only works as well as the person setting it up.
